At Last (Osborne arrangement)
Download/view this sound (in MIDI format)
This is an alternate arrangement of the At Last chord sequence that Wayne Osborne produced and sent to me.
The arrangement is interesting because it shows how an arranger can eliminate notes from chords and still express the essential sound of the chord. In many instances Wayne has removed one or two notes from the complete spelling of the chord but has left behind the notes that properly express the proper feeling of the chord in that context. At the last repeat of the A section (this is an AABA tune), he uses only the root to express the sound of the MA7 chord that is usual at that point in the tune.
Here is a score of Wayne's arrangement. Here is the original arrangement that we posted for At Last.
In Wayne's version you will see that the reduced arrangement is assigned different chord symbol names than those used in the original arrangement. If you check out the notes used in the chord voicings, you can see that in many cases they use a subset of the pitches that were used in the original.
