Kostas,

I don't know if this will help but about fifteen years ago,  I read of a book then recently published,   that chronicled the history of German Song writing and the composers,  which if I recall,   peaked in the late 1800's.

Sorry I can't be more specific or give you a book title but there may be a book available to help you in your search.

The gist of the book dealt with the concept that German Songwriting in this period (?) achieved the status of a minor art form unto itself.
