Ha ! Cute reply.  I can't know what Mendelsshon was thinking but this a good point when it comes to sticky definitions of terms.   I'll only guess and project that maybe he considered these little pieces to be so musically lyrical that he could get away with calling them  'Songs without Words'.

Let's call it a case of poetic license on his part and yes,  some of these pieces nearly fit the bill.   Chas
