MIDI files can be very small because a note to be played can be described by a very small set of integer numbers which specify the pitch and duration of a note and an index number which identifies the kind of isynthesized instrument which wil play the note.

Web browsers will play a MIDI sequence as a background sound almost instantaneously.

MIDI files can be read by music editing software and transformed into a musical score which can be edited into a new form.
