Composing and arranging Part 4 In this part we will discuss the use of additional istruments to enhance a simple composition as in Part 3. In this example I have added clarinet, flute and cello, as well as giving extra emphasis to the strings. We'll examine the functions of each in turn. Strings - adding octaves to the melody will add more body, as will the simple thirds added to lower melody. Clarinet - doubling the melody gives a fresh new texture. Flutes - a simple obligato for the first four bars, followed by thirds above the melody - note that by simplifying the first violins at this point changes the balance of the melody. Cello - a simple counter melody in quavers - adding a light rhythm 3 beats to the bar. The complete 16 bars are appended as Example 2, and a gif file with the same name. I will be pleased to respond to any queries, even tho' we are discussing a near forgotten aspect of music.
